ABSTRACT
Nearly all of the energy that we use today has been collected and stored by the process of photosynthesis. The amount of carbon fixed each year by autotrophic plants, in the form of biomass, is roughly 200 billion tonnes, or approximately ten times the energy equivalent used yearly in the world. Of these 200 billion tonnes, 800 million (0.4%) are used to feed the human population.
