ABSTRACT

Location: Diyarbakir, the largest city in southeastern Turkey, is the capital of the province (vilayet) of the same name. It is situated on a bluff in a fertile plain of the upper Tigris River valley, in northern historic Mesopotamia and cultural Kurdistan. The surrounding region is separated from eastern Anatolia by the Taurus Mountains in the north, and from the Mesopotamian plain by the Mardin hills in the south.
