ABSTRACT
In the southwestern part of Syria on the Barada River, which feeds the Ghouta Oasis. Immediately to the east is the Jabal-Qasiyun (the Qasiyun Mountain), part of the Anti-Lebanon Mountains. Fifty-seven miles southeast is Beirut; to the east and northeast of the city is the Syrian Desert, virtually uninhabited.
