ABSTRACT

Although wind and percussion instruments had been the backbone of military music for centuries, it was only in the late eighteenth century that the band attained its modern form and function. As shown in Chapter 4, that happened rather suddenly in France at the start of the Revolution. The most important military music with trombone parts is all French. The few pieces written outside of France that I have identified are all mentioned in Chapter 3. I have not seen any of these, so this chapter is necessarily limited to French music.
