ABSTRACT

The Moyne Commission’s Report advised granting Jamaica greater autonomy in the political sphere. Very soon, these first recommendations were overtaken by the demands of Manley’s PNP claiming Dominion status for the island from 1940. From the economic point of view it would be justified to speak of a veritable take-off with reference to the years 1950 to 1965. It was quite probably with Tate and Lyle in mind that Forster, Philipps and Creyke wrote in 1968: ‘A plantation is an export-oriented agricultural concern characterized by an organization employing a large number of experienced executives and large capital inputs. Plantations are centralized and practise division of labour to produce one or, more rarely, two agricultural products. The West Indies Sugar Company had been founded in 1937 around the Frome estate to which had been added, in 1938, the Monymusk estate. Immediately extensive work was undertaken and the Frome central factory came onstream in 1939.
