ABSTRACT

Electronic music appeared in the work of Merce Cunningham as early as 1952, and its use increased into the 1970s, by which time it had become predominant in his company's performances. The principal innovators in this field were John Cage, the company's music director, and David Tudor, company musician from its inception in 1953, who himself began to compose innovative electronic scores in the late 1960s. Both Cage and Tudor were responsible for devising custom-made instruments to play these scores. Other musicians also contributed to the development, and have continued to do so up to the present time.
