In 1967, Jasper Johns became the artistic advisor for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Previously, from 1954 to 1964, Robert Rauschenberg had been the resident designer. Rauschenberg's contributions to Cunningham's theatre were, as is well known, significant. Nevertheless, the differences between Rauschenberg and Johns in their respective approaches to scene design for the company became immediately noticeable.
