ABSTRACT

In the remainder of this Section (Chapters 4–5) we begin the analysis of the contribution made by improvised works to different art forms, by discussing individual media separately for the purposes of clarity. In the next Section (Chapters 6–8) we gradually combine them. Some of the interesting uses of any particular medium have occurred within the monomedia (and appear in this Section), others within bi- and polymedia, and hence will be discussed later. We commence with sound and verbal monomedia; a polymedia such as theatre, which uses words, will be discussed in a later chapter.
