ABSTRACT

This selection of Craig's writings is not intended to represent the whole range of his ideas, but to illuminate key elements in his "Art of the Theater". It is also compiled from works that are less accessible, out of print or unpublished, although some of the most significant passages are included from Craig's major theoretical work, On the Art of the Theater. (Where passages have been cut within extracts, this is indicated by asterisks.)

Irving at the Lyceum (1930) from Henry Irving I HAVE said that I cannot describe Irving's performance in The Bells: but though I cannot describe it (and the whole play was merely a series of variations on one theme - Irving), I will try and put down a few notes of little moments remembered.
