ABSTRACT
In spite of the public rhetoric about the desirability of sustainability, the management of resources is becoming less sustainable, not more. The ratchet effect is one force that drives research and management in the direction of unsustainablity A second factor is the increasing scale of modern resource management. The lower short-term cost resulting from “efficiencies of scale” also drives the trend toward decreasing sustainability of management systems.
