ABSTRACT

The opening of the Theater am Bülowplatz is the ‘curtain line’ of the first act of the story of the Volksbühne. The second act runs from the end of the war to 1933, when the movement was taken over by the Nazis, while the third act, which is still running, begins with the re-establishment of the Volksbühne after the Nazi defeat. What happened during the First World War may be regarded as an interval between the acts, a sustaining operation simply to keep the movement in being.
