What are the proper ends, or purposes of government? One intelligent answer came from the British author, C.S. Lewis, who wrote,

There is a special charm in Lewis’ view of government as being in service to the husband and wife chatting before a fire, to gardening, to “ordinary happiness.” This latter phrase actually should hold a special resonance with Americans; after all, the Declaration of Independence commits this nation to the advancement of certain inalienable rights, notably “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
