ABSTRACT

A discussion takes place between two people, the rhythm of the argument may be a continuous ebb and flow, and then a third person suddenly enters with deliberate gravity to slow the exchange in order to take the argument to a "deeper level". There are, of course, extraordinary persons who match their convictions with actions and for whom conviction has consequences. The person who calls him- or herself a victim may or may not be one. An individual black person or an individual woman or an individual Jew is not entitled to the claim of being a victim as a deduction from the proposition that blacks have been enslaved and persecuted or that women have been treated as inferior or that Jews have been persecuted. The person on the right is disposed to blame the homeless for making a mess of their lives, so he feels complacent in his unwillingness to provide government support, perhaps even to give a handout.
