This chapter compares our special sample of 14 kinds of community leaders with a cross-section of the population in the cities of 10,000 to 150,000 from whom these leaders are drawn, and also with a cross-section of the entire United States, with respect to the following question:

Are various types of community leaders more likely, or less likely, than people in the cross-section to respect the civil rights of radicals and other nonconformists, even though they may suspect or dis­ approve their opinions?
