ABSTRACT

The Council of Florence, which dealt with the division between the Greek and Latin Churches, also gave expression to significant teaching on the sacraments. The Council met with the representatives of the Armenian Church, and as a result a decree was published that contained important instruction concerning the sacraments. There are seven sacraments of the New Law they are, baptism, confirmation, the eucharist, penance, extreme unction, orders, and marriage. These are quite different from the sacraments of the Old Law, which did not cause grace, but foreshadowed the grace that was to be bestowed solely through the passion of Christ. Three elements are involved in the full administration of all these sacraments, viz. things as the matter, words as the form, and the person of the minister performing the sacrament with the intention of doing what the Church does. There are three of the sacraments, baptism, confirmation, and orders, which imprint on the soul an indelible character.
