ABSTRACT

Industrial establishments in rural areas are considered as a part of industry if they are directly operated by communes but as subsidiary occupations in agriculture if they are run by basic accounting units of communes. Construction and industry are closely related, particularly because machinery and equipment is frequently installed by its manufacturers and because construction enterprises sometimes are engaged in the production of building materials on construction sites. Heavy industry is composed of electric power, coal-mining, petroleum, iron and steel, nonferrous metals, metal-processing, basic chemicals, building materials, and lumber, while light industry includes paper, textile, food-processing, pharmaceuticals, leather, printing, and other industries manufacturing daily necessities. Modern industry is composed of modern factories and handicraft factories. Ownership of enterprises is one of the most important criteria adopted in China for the classification of industry. Data on the structure of industry contain information on the number of enterprises and on the classification of these enterprises by size.
