ABSTRACT

During development, the organs of the body change by increasing in size and, in some instances, by changing their physiological functioning. A great deal more is known about changes in the external characteristics of the body, particularly height and weight, than is known about changes in internal characteristics. The endocrine gland system and the nervous system are directly involved in psychological functioning in complex ways. The endocrine glands, or ductless glands, are located throughout the body. The pituitary gland, also called the "hypophysis", has a profound effect on physical development in adolescence. The pituitary gland has two lobes, each of which secretes different hormones. The secretion of the posterior lobe of the pituitary is pituitrin. It has three known effects on the body: it raises blood pressure by constricting blood vessels, it affects the functioning of smooth muscles, and it has an antidiuretic effect.
