ABSTRACT
Good Catholics, respondents assert in overwhelming numbers, must believe in the resurrection of Jesus and his real presence in Eucharist. The issue of war and peace is especially pertinent at the time as the Iraq war continues. Forty-four percent of Chicago Catholics think that the Good Catholic must accept the church's teaching on war and peace—54 percent of those born since 1989, 49 percent of those who have graduated from college, and half of the women. There is a long history of college-educated Catholics becoming active in social justice matters and staying with the cause through most of their lives. In the thirties and forties, Father Martin Carabine S.J. presided over a group called the Chicago Inner Scholastic Catholic Action (CISCA) out of which came many social activists, such as John Cogley and James O'Gara, who presided over The Commonweal magazine for many years.
