ABSTRACT

Fortunately, in spite of the politics there are glimmers of hope found in schools and approaches that do work for all children. Some of those examples are found in traditional schools, some in alternative schools. Of course, there have been examples of hope found in the reform efforts in certain states, particularly in states that have advanced more quality educational choice options for their children. The Wall Street Journal called 2011 the year of school choice because of all of the various educational choice measures popping up in various states. In spite of all of the partisanship and rancor, many state legislators keep pushing to expand these options for children. In our nation's Capitol, public schools had finally begun to show improvement under the leadership of Chancellor Kaya Henderson, who has been able to navigate the politics of the city better than her well-intentioned predecessor, Michelle Rhee.
