ABSTRACT

During the spring of 1963, the Civil Rights Movement was at an impasse. The Kennedy administration's civil rights bill was losing steam and Dr. King was searching for a way to bring momentum to the movement. Environmentalism is the most popular social movement in the United States today. The Gay Rights Movement gained significant cultural influence thanks to these mainstream shows launched in the late 1990s that purposely showed members of the LGBT community engaged in traditional social and family situations, making them relatable across liberal and conservative households. The Soul City television drama series is part of a multimedia health promotion and social change project by the Soul City Institute for Health and Development Communication (SC IHDC). It weaves health and social issues into real-life stories for the millions of people who have grown to trust the powerful messages of this very popular program.
