ABSTRACT

Everyone knows about Columbine because of the shootings that took place at that school. The profession, young, good teachers would have something to aspire to beyond just years in the same classroom with little or no recognition. The bottom line is that in our new learning-rich environment, being a great teacher should mean a whole lot more than it does now, both among peers and in society as a whole. When school leaders take care of the simple things for their teachers and engage their day-to-day needs in a collaborative way, teachers are empowered and children benefit. Teachers have also been hurt by the lack of consistency found in most school districts pertaining to professional development. It is easy to see why some teachers get burned out when many get little, if any, direct substantive feedback, professional development is minimal, and room for advancement within the profession has limits.
