ABSTRACT

In the spring following his defeat for State Attorney General, Tilden joined the faction in Tammany that sought the overthrow of the Mayor. Tweed, now School Commissioner—there was little more in the office than a title, but he kept his hand in the game—was one of the second string leaders of the Anti-Wood Democrats. Elijah F. Purdy, called the jovial old war-horse of Tammany, was the directing genius of the forces bent on the destruction of Wood.
