ABSTRACT

The Ladder of Eros is the longing between the two separate ends of the correspondence that validates the artwork. The Ladder of Eros is a ladder of love as desire, and that such love knows no bounds. This chapter describes the Ladder of Eros as it pertains to listening. There are ten degrees of listening. The first degree of listening is interest. The second rung or degree is tuche. The third step concerns symbolism. The fourth degree is individual taste. At the fifth rung the difference between good and bad taste becomes audible, whereas this audibility in taste is unclear at the rungs beneath it. At the sixth rung one begins to make aesthetic differentiations and gain discernment. The seventh rung of listening is that of understanding. At the eighth level of listening one is not just theoretically proficient. The ninth rung on the ladder of listening is that of accomplishment. The tenth rung is that of the composer.
