ABSTRACT

The Arab ideological system consists of simple ideas: Palestine was stolen from the Arabs; they are entitled to have it restored even if that means the liquidation of Israel; since Israel was established by robbery, it is an evil State. The Arab ideologists and their leaders have taken pains to weave a tissue of a certain completeness and even inner consistency. In the Arab attitude to the conflict there are certainly many psychological aspects, but in addition there is a real issue: the struggle for a territory. The declarations of the leaders are not a reliable measure of what they intend to do, but their statements have much to teach us about the Arabs and their conduct, as well as expressing their "verbal behaviour".
