ABSTRACT

The jazz musician has come to expect a non-emotional response to emotion; which in some sense is precisely what the rock culture is in rebellion against. No more than a decade ago, recordings were being made for "square" audiences who loved the classics and hated jazz. It is a sign of new generational fissures that the jazz audience has moved over into the camp of the squares, seeking comfort and solace in its "art" music over and above "pop" music. The selection of recordings will not be exhaustive or exclusive; but rather representative and illustrative of major trends and tendencies. The selection of rock albums is based on considerations of innovation and invention that hopefully reveal certain jazz qualities: high improvisation, solid arrangement, awareness of social roots and tradition, novel harmonies and rhythmic patterns and so forth.
