ABSTRACT

Imaywellexplainwhatsocialanthropology is,whatareitsdifficulties,limitationsand achievements,andwhatitsresearchescontributetoanunderstandingofhumanproblems.

Socialanthropologyisthatbranchofsociology whichconcernsitselfwiththeso-calledprimitivepeoples.Thisdivisionofthescienceinto branchesdealingwithcivilisedandprimitive peoplesislargelyhistorical,notlogical,particularlysincethe"primitive"Africantodayis partofmodernindustrialcivilisation-heworks initsminesandfactoriesandheconsumestheir products.ThereforeIshallspeakof"sociology" ratherthanof"socialanthropology,"butI shalldrawmyexamplesfromstudiesofprimitivetribes,astheywereandastheyare.In doingso,Ishalltendtochooseexamplesfrom workdoneinthisregion,asbeingofmore interesttomyreaders.Thisismyexcuseforan apparentoveremphasisontheworkofmyimmediatecolleaguesandmyself.
