ABSTRACT

Theconceptoftribalcultureisbasedon threefundamentalaspectsofthebehaviorof membersoftribalsocieties.First,itisaconstructthatrepresentstheideal,norm,average, orexpectablebehaviorofallmembersofafairly small,simple,independent,self-contained,and homogeneoussociety.I t isanormderivedfrom thesomewhatvariedordeviantmodesofindividualbehavior.I t representsessentialuniformities,whicharesharedbyallpersons,despite somespecialmodesofbehaviorassociatedwith sex,age,occupation,andotherroles;forthere aredefiniteandfairlynarrowlimitstodeviant behaviorinmosttribalculturalactivities.Tribal societyisnotdivisibleintogenuinesubcultural groupswhichhaveaquasi-independentexistence anddistinctivewayoflife.Theconceptoftribal cultureemphasizessharedbehavior.
