CoNFLICTbetweenreligionandnaturalscience, concerningtheoriginandstatusofMan,disturbedmanyscholarsofthelastcenturynot onlyintellectuallybutalsointheirpersonal lives.CharlesDarwin,whohadoriginallyintendedtobecomeaclergymanoftheEstablished Church,recalledthatevenwhenanundergraduatehedidnot'intheleastdoubtthestrict andliteraltruthofeverywordintheBible.' SirJamesFrazerhadbeenbroughtupina devoutandaffectionatePresbyterianfamily, wherehehad'learnedtheShorterCatechismby heartandaccepteditsteachingwithoutquestion asthestandardoforthodoxy.'Likesomany othersofthetime,bothofthemcametoreject thedoctrinesinwhichtheyhadbeenreared, whichweretoonarrow,ortoonarrowlyunderstood,toaccommodatetheirmatureexperience.
