ABSTRACT

MARCH 6, 2008. GORDON CAMPBELL didn’t expect the pink slip. He had survived California’s Inland Valley Daily Bulletin’s other rounds of layoffs and his daily cartoons were now being carried by fifty additional papers nationwide in the MediaNews chain. With the 2008 presidential contest off to a rollicking start in Iowa and New Hampshire, life was good for Campbell—or so it seemed: “I’ll be damned if my cartoons weren’t getting better and better as the conflict raged. But… there was an ominous soundtrack playing in the background…. The guillotine was wheeling into the newsroom!”
