ABSTRACT
The targets of the penal reforms discussed thus far have been somewhat silenced. While much has been said about the subjection of offenders to brutal conditions of punishment and confinement in the course of reform, inmate responses to these conditions have not been explored. More specifically, the psychological impact of confinement and the social organization of life behind bars have not been examined from the perspective of the inmate.
