ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how American doctors established Western medical education in Canton and what role the medical students trained by Americans played in medical modernization in Canton as well as in China. This chapter also explores how the Cantonese medical students started to develop Chinese nationalism and to carry out political and social reforms in China. Western medical education in Canton led to the beginning of modern medical education in China. The development of the missionary medical schools helped produce men and women competent to become lecturers at private and public medical colleges. In brief, the establishment of the South China Medical School resulted in the creation of several medical schools in Canton, making Canton one of the modern medical education centers in China. The combination of Chinese and Western medications facilitated localization of Western medication and effectively fulfilled the cultural and social needs of the Chinese people.
