ABSTRACT

The cochlear implant first received approval of the United States federal government in 1984. At that time, there was much skepticism about the idea that a device implanted inside someone head would suddenly restore his or her hearing. The Bionic Ear Institute in Australia is tackling the problem of deafness from a different angle. The organization is attempting to devise an implant for the inner ear that will literally shock damaged nerves back to health. Skin regeneration and rejuvenation might emerge from completely different fields. Many are looking not to cosmetic-based therapies, but such cutting edge fields as stem-cell science to eventually re-invent practically all parts of the body. The most accessible of the techniques is caloric restriction (CR). At this point CR is the only technology which has irrefutably been shown to stop aging, and to imbue those utilizing the technique profoundly "youthful" existences throughout their very long lifetimes.
