ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at whether certain opposition might prevent or postpone the day when super longevity and even near-immortality become reality. Members of the pro-super longevity group are always amazed that some people adamantly oppose any radical extension of the human life span. The President's Council on Bioethics is one of those powerful groups that supporters of super longevity fear could sabotage efforts to radically extend the human life span. The Alliance for Aging Research poll indicated that people would prefer as little interference from government as possible in the scientific research process. 61 percent of respondents believe that scientists should be free to explore new areas of medical research with a minimum of federal regulation. The most flagrant violation of the emerging zeitgeist of the new age is the growing practice of physician-assisted suicide in Scandinavian countries and one United States, Oregon. In 2006, California, some legislators were hoping it would become the second state to legalize physician-assisted suicide.
