ABSTRACT

This chapter describes various social processes used to strengthen and maintain the views of world and self that have been adopted by those who remain in treatment or training beyond the early months. These processes entail the use of programmatic rituals, aweinspiring mythologies, and the experience of miracle at Redemption House and Recovery House. Relapse is a potential threat to all ideological initiates, of any "faith", therefore virtually all identity-altering or conversionary organizations and movements institute or develop "therapies" to combat the loss of membership that can occur at this point. Prayer is the central ritual at Redemption House largely because it invokes the central figure of the faith, the source of change and support. At Redemption House, prayer is the central activity, because it is the means by which new disciples objectify their faith in a way that it can be experienced concretely by others.
