ABSTRACT

In this account of the growth of sociology during the past hundred years little has been said about some subjects which are closely allied to it. Sociology is now being introduced into colleges of education, it is likely therefore to lead to research oriented to pedagogical purposes. Sociology has grown on the back of the natural sciences. Its practitioners call themselves scientists and pay their deep respects to quantification, rigorous use of methodological techniques, propositional statements, use of technical jargon and the like. With the improvement in techniques of investigation such as questionnaire construction, interviewing and data processing, especially the use of computers, so there has been a growing demand for sociologists in government, industry, market research agencies, and the like. Governments do not hesitate to spend large sums where they believe sociology may help, especially is this so in the USA.
