ABSTRACT

On May 21 we return to the Virginia-Monadnock Garden to spend our last three weeks completing the work we began in the fall. Monadnock Street is quiet and bright with morning sun. There have been a few changes in the garden in our absence; the jungle gym has been transplanted to a new location near the street, and someone has repaired the chain-link fence. A backhoe and two operators are there when we arrive, getting ready to start work spreading sand in the new play area at the front of the lot. We stroll about the little park, checking out the place we once knew so well and telling Rosa, Will, and Chris what we have done so far. Bob Haas's house still looks the same; so does the empty house next door. And, of course, we all look up to see that the black Adidas sneakers are still dangling from the telephone wire high overhead.
