ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the findings from study concerning both the availability and utilization of workplace supports by working couples caring for children and aging parents. It focuses on the types of supports that respondents wish their employers offered. The chapter also presents findings concerning the relationship between utilization of workplace supports and work-family fit, well-being, and work outcomes. It reports the findings from analyses conducted to determine the existence of crossover effects, or the extent to which one spouse's use of supports affects the other. The chapter provides national-level data on the utilization and availability of workplace supports. To knowledge, the only other national data available to this extent are those provided by the Families and Work Institute, based on its 1998 Business Work-Life survey and its 2005 National Study of Employers, as well as its National Study of the Changing Workforce.
