ABSTRACT

In 1815 Viotti performed in the fourth and the sixth concerts of the Philharmonic Society, both times with his pupil Mori and both times as leader of the orchestra. The most important event on the Philharmonic Society's 1815 calendar was a visit from its favourite composer Luigi Cherubini, who was in England from February to June to preside at the performances of his three new works that had been commissioned by the Society. In 1815 the Philharmonic Society commissioned three works from Cherubini, a symphony, an overture and a cantata, for which they paid him £200. Along with composers Cherubini and Ries there were two French instrumentalists making their first appearance at the Philharmonic concerts in 1815. In May 1815 Cherubini was present at another soiree organized by Margaret at the Charles Street house. Viotti's association with the Philharmonic Society led to many of its musicians performing at private concerts in the Charles Street drawing room.
