ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the various ways in which we can help people through the process of change. One way workers can help people change is to encourage them to see change as a series of small manageable steps and then support and encourage them through each step. Sometimes one of the most useful things workers can do is help clients to become aware of their feelings and to manage those feelings so they can behave more appropriately. Workers need to help clients identify the specific problems they want to work on. This might include behaviour that they want or need to change. When the client is feeling more confident about one or two pieces of behaviour encourage them to link these together. Often when one or two things feel better people are encouraged and other parts will start to fall into place.
