ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at further ways of engaging the client as a partner in their own change process whereby that change can be sustained and consolidated over a period of time, while encouraging the client towards a more pro-social lifestyle. Assessment systems may lead to factors being included in treatment/sentence plans that the client will not ‘buy into’. It is easy for us to see clients as agents of their own misfortune when they might see themselves as victims of circumstances beyond their control; often the reality is somewhere between the two. The client’s and the worker’s view of what the problem is, or what the most important problem is, might change over time. The offender manager or case manager has a responsibility to make the process of referral and the ongoing work with the client consistent with the aims of collaborative, pro-social problem solving.
