ABSTRACT

This chapter examines sex differences in biology and psychology, since these areas form the basis for the various functions and abilities that we understand collectively as musical aptitude. It mentions that hormones initiate sex differentiation in the human foetus. The chapter highlights a number of differences which are specific to musical aptitude. Obviously, the area of music psychology is vast, and the chapter outlines its ideas. The chapter concentrates on the aspects of psychology and neurology which pertain to the previously discussed similarities and differences in male and female brain structure and organization. Male and female differences in sensitivity to rhythm have been related to stereotypical male and female characteristics, males being extroverts and females introverts.
