ABSTRACT

A feeling of great joy came over the musician. He had guessed what was to come: the guitar would produce offspring everywhere, a family infinitely diverse, of the strangest shapes and materials, a family that would soon cover the planet. Robert Fripp emerges unannounced upon a Tokyo stage that is dimly lit in various shades of blue. Immediately there is applause, from an audience sitting but also still arriving. He places the guitar that he carries on stage upon its stand and reaches for another already there. He kisses the guitar and puts its strap over his head. The guitar sits across Shankar's lap. It appears as a red, thin-bodied guitar with an extra-thick neck. Its colouring is slightly darker than her sari. She moves a metal bar over the strings, which are positioned well above the frets - the guitar has a high action - to produce the melody notes.
