ABSTRACT

Several publications have been fundamental to the understanding of gender and sexuality as expressed in the new guitarscape. This chapter deals with fundamental issues relating to an individual's core identity, feelings and anxieties, constructs and concerns at the very heart of their lives as people first and as guitarists second. However, beyond the huge collection of writing on white male heterosexual guitarists, there has been limited serious attention given to the subject of women and the guitar. Women guitarists face some of the same challenges that many women in the world face at the workplace. In Gender in the Music Industry Marion Leonard shows how notions of gender and the potential for empowerment for all affect the workings of a rapidly changing music industry. Leonard's work suggests that anybody going into the music profession is still likely to face enormous challenges but enormous range of opportunities available to both men and women.
