ABSTRACT

Three members of the Ulster Hall Company – Lyons, Coates and Dunville – made several visits to London to do with the new organ and found themselves attracted by the skills, reputation and personality of Edmund Thomas Chipp. He was the son of a well-known London musician, Thomas Paul Chipp, a leading performer at all the principal festivals as timpanist and harpist. Edmund Chipp was a former chorister of the Chapel Royal, had been a violinist in the Queen's private band for 12 years and had a doctorate of music from Cambridge. The intention of the progenitors of the Ulster Hall that it should have many uses was demonstrated by flower shows held there in July and August and the holding of a demonstration as part of the annual celebration of the Relief of Londonderry.
