ABSTRACT

Glanville-Hicks arrived in london on 21 July 1932. She immediately set about applying for scholarships offered by the Royal College of Music, competing with talent drawn from across the United Kingdom. The carlotta rowe scholarship had been established to give support to female composers in the predominantly male world of composition, and Glanville-Hicks was to hold it for the duration of her study in london, from 1932 to 1936. In terms of musical ideology, scarcely a hiccup in her transition from 1932 Melbourne – musically still very much a British colony – to london and the Royal College of Music. She had immersed herself in london's rich musical culture, attending concerts and socializing with staff and students from the Royal College. In 1934 Glanville-Hicks took a walking holiday in Portugal and Spain with her brother garth, who was spending some time in london, his friend robert eggleston, and fellow composer and friend from the Royal College, esther rofe.
