Nostalgia is, of course, a permanent feature of the human psyche and manifests itself in all ages in ways that are characteristic of those ages, but one of the most striking characteristics of the period of this book is the reverence for, approaching at times obsession with, the past in general and certain ages in particular – ages that had not been the subject of such a degree of interest previously, such as the Medieval.
