ABSTRACT
Musical knowledge is everywhere one of the necessities of communal life, in large part because musicians, dancers, and ceremonial specialists can articulate and explore attitudes toward older and newer ways of living together. The musical practices of most North American communities have combined idioms, styles, and genres introduced at various times, and performances are often charged with references to social and cultural history.
