ABSTRACT

The late 1970s and early 1980s saw the emergence of Aboriginal organizations that funded the creation and dissemination of Aboriginal rock. These organizations included the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music (CASM), in Adelaide, where bands such as No Fixed Address, Us Mob, and Coloured Stone formed. Another seminal organization was the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA), in Alice Springs. As a radio station serving remote communities, C A A M A realized that to broadcast what its constituency demanded, it needed to record more Aboriginal music, so it started the studio that has produced the largest number of Aboriginal contemporary recordings in Australia.
