ABSTRACT

The study of the music of Oceania invites multidimensional methods of approach and analysis. Poetic text, melodic and rhythmic rendering, visual expression in movement, musical instruments, costumes, and performing spaces are examined with the social contexts of the activities and events of which music is a part. Symbolism and aesthetics contribute to the understanding of concepts associated with the recording, preservation, notation, and analysis of sound, movement, language, and musical instruments.
