ABSTRACT
In most Oceanic societies, composers are responsible for more than inventing musical sounds: they versify texts, choreograph movements, direct rehearsals, and lead performances. The English word composer is therefore inadequate to convey the range of activities managed by musically active individuals in Oceania.
